2012 Sackets Harbor: AWARD WINNER

I won 3rd Place at the Sackets Harbor 2012 Plein Air Competition with this oil painting of the local ice cream shop. In 2009, I entered the competition and had painted this same composition and guess what....won 3rd Place. So, since this was a popular scene for collectors, I decided to recreate it, on site, again in 2012. It reminds me of all the ice cream flavors: pistachio, vanilla, black raspberry, etc. I had lots of fun painting it....even a second time.

I drove to Sackets Harbor, NY for the Plein Aire Derby on July 17th & 18th. What a lovely waterfront town with lots of historic buildings. Each day, we submitted one painting. At the end of the second day, the art association held the judging and then a public auction. I am proud to say, I won Third Place and a cash prize!!! Not only that, I also sold the piece to a young mother and her two sons from Tequesta, FL, who travels to Sackets Harbor each year. They buy a painting as a memento.
My piece is of a small, colorful building where the owner sells ice cream. There are small bistro tables in front. The brushwork has lots of movement, and the colors are vibrant and alive. The overall color scheme is green and purple and the size is 8" x 8" square.
